What is keyword research?

Keyword research is finding the words and phrases people type into Google when they’re looking for what you offer. Good keyword research tells you which topics deserve a page, how many people you could reach, and how hard it will be to rank.

The best keywords for a small or growing website usually aren’t the biggest ones. They’re specific searches with steady demand and competition you can realistically beat, like “emergency plumber in austin” rather than “plumber”.

How to do keyword research with Serpstash

1. Start from what you know

Enter a few keywords that describe your business in Keyword research to see their monthly searches, cost per click and competition. Then use Keyword ideas to find related searches you hadn’t thought of.

2. Learn from your competitors

Competitor keywords shows everything a competing website ranks for and the traffic it gets. Keyword gap lines your website up against up to three others and lists the searches they win and you don’t. For a full side-by-side view, see competitor analysis.

3. Check individual pages

Page keywords shows what a single page ranks for, which is handy for finding out why a competitor’s guide does so well, or what your own blog post already ranks for.

4. Turn keywords into pages, then track them

Write or improve a page for each keyword you choose, then add it to the rank tracker. Serpstash checks the page against the keyword and tells you what to improve.

Credits, explained

All six tools share one monthly credit allowance, so you can spend it where it’s most useful. Each tool page shows how many credits you’ve used this month. Compare allowances on the pricing page.

FAQ

Keyword research questions, answered

What are keyword credits?

The research tools spend credits as they fetch data, for example 1 credit per keyword in Keyword research or 2 per keyword in Competitor keywords. Your plan includes a monthly allowance that resets on the 1st. Unused credits don’t roll over.

Do repeat searches use credits?

No. Running the same search again within 7 days is free, and your projects’ automatic updates never use credits.

Which countries can I research?

Keyword data covers many countries, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia, so you can research the market you sell to.

What is a keyword gap?

A list of the keywords other websites rank for and yours doesn’t. Compare your website with up to 3 others to find topics you’re missing.

What do search volume, CPC and competition mean?

Search volume is how many times a month people search for a keyword. CPC is what advertisers pay per click, a hint of how valuable visitors are. Competition shows how crowded the keyword is.

How many credits do I get?

The free plan includes 100 credits a month, and paid plans include more. The pricing page lists each plan’s allowance.
